Information from the biology talks.

Window farms take up very little space and don't require a lot of land.

They are usually grown in small boxes, bottles or even pots, and because they are in such small containers, they can grow easily in the wildest places.

it is true that some people use recycled water for their window farms but not just recycled water, but water from fish bowls.

  • when you grow your plants in the ground = more space/ less work
  • when you grow your plants in a pot = less space/ more work.( as you have to keep your eye on it and meet its needs)
When you work with vertical gardens it is easy to make it very fashionable, because there is not a lot of land used, meaning you can focus on minor detail.

Although plants will only successfully grow if the Roots are kept in the dark e.g. a black tray, black soil, black wrapping ect.

It is essential that you always grow what you want to eat!

this is a picture of plants being grown on the roof of a bus.

Facts about starvation.

1) More than 842 million people around the world do not have enough to eat.

2) Over 500 million people in Asia suffer from starvation, because of this Asia is known for having the largest number of hungry people.

 3) 24.8 % of  the Sub- Saharan African population are starving.
 4) If women farmers had the same access to resources as men, the number of hungry people  in the world could decrease by 150 million people.

5) Poor nutrition causes  45% of deaths to children under fives years old-. this results in 3.1 million children each year.

6) One out of six children in the world  (100 million ) living in developing countries are underweight.

How do window farms increase Food Security

Window Farms are so important for food security. They increase food security because they use very little space. Today, our planet is running out of space at a very fast rate. Also, it is very cheap to build. The rich and poor can build window farms. You can find many household items that can be useful for a window farm. Poor families have a very convenient and cheap way of producing their own food when having a window farm.

These window farms below are simple to make and probably cost nothing as you can see they are made out of recycled bottles.

What is Food Security?

We have heard many definitions of food security. We had a very good talk last Wednesday about food security and how the whole system works. The guy who took us had a very good definition but we have come up with our own. Food security is defined as the availability of food and one's access to it. This includes that the food is affordable, healthy and the food is right for all cultures.
